The federal republic of Nigeria, popularly referred to as Nigeria, is a country in the African continent. Nigeria has a total land area of 983,213 square
Kilometres of which 773,783sq. kilometres are in the savanna zones 75,707sq. kilometers are in the derived savanna zones and 133,717 square kilometers are in the forest zone. Nigerian
population is more than 120 million yielding an average density of more than 120persons per
square kilometer. Although this density may vary from one region to another, it is obvious that Nigeria is already experiencing high population
density. The interaction of these millions of Nigerians with their respective environment has
left an indelible mark on the landscape. The manifestation
of these impacts includes; urbanization, deforestation, desertification, overpopulation and
all kinds of pollution. These impacts have both negative and positive effects on the natural
environment. It is how to preserve the environment against the negative impacts of man’s
interaction with the environment that is emphasized in this article.

Nigeria, like any other place in the world, is faced with a couple of environmental challenges ranging from waste management, soil degradation, pollution, climate change, and deforestation. These are a few of the major environmental challenges faced in Nigeria.
The causes of these problems can be mainly by natural forces and human (anthropogenic) influences, or a combination of the two.
Natural causes of environmental challenges include climatic, geologic, atmospheric, disease, and biological factors.
Anthropogenic challenges are caused mainly by human interference with the environment such as population growth, wasteful and unsustainable resource use, poverty, as well as insufficient
knowledge of how nature works as the major causes of environmental problems. Also, the poor application of the principles of environmental management is a major cause of some of
the environmental challenges in Nigeria. Human activities like agriculture, fishing, livestock rearing and hunting are mounting pressures on the environment.

The terms challenge, problem, hazard, and disaster sometimes are used interchangeably in environmental literature. Challenges refer to the existence of crises in the environment in such a way that it can cause damage to man or his environment. In essence, they are occurrences that are dangerous or potentially harmful to man and his environment.
Nigeria is not left out in the spatio-temporal distribution of environmental challenges. Nevertheless, in term of frequency, anthropogenic challenges are more prevalent in the country. The socio-economic crisis of environmental challenges stems from man-environment interaction.
Thus, In order to save the environment from further degradation of the rich and exhaustive resources, it becomes inherent to address the challenges so as to be able to achieve environmental sustainability.

In order to preserve the environment from environmental challenges caused both by man and nature, some steps have been proposed and they are listed below:
1.) Scientific assessment.
2.) Risk analysis.
3.) Public education and involvement.
4.) Political action and long term evaluation.

Subsidiaries of this approach includes:
1.) Conservation of natural resources.
2.) Pollution abatement.
3.) Control of bush fires.
4.) Planned industrial development.
5.) Evaluation and monitoring of radioactivity.

In conclusion, addressing environmental challenges and preserving the environment in Nigeria, requires the role of the government (at national, state and
local levels), non-governmental organizations, and community based organizations, as well as individuals. It also necessitates the collaborative efforts of international organizations, law enforcement agencies, academics and technocrats, the youth, the press as well as national and multi-national companies.
